The scientific field of 3D technologies for cultural heritage brings together research activities related to developing innovative methods and tools for enhancing cultural heritage and its fruition. This scientific field includes the activities pertaining to the acquisition of both terrestrial and underwater archaeological, architectural and anthropological finds, in the form of geometric models and/or digital images and their subsequent processing for their use for various purposes such as:
- Digitization and documentation of Cultural Heritage information.
- Development of methods and technologies for the management, protection, conservation, and dissemination of knowledge of cultural heritage:
- Development of automatic hardware and software systems for the enhancement and/or use of archaeological, architectural, and anthropological finds.
- Development of technologies for the reconstruction of damaged assets, support for archaeological classification and identification of their characteristic elements.
- Development of technologies for the protection, restoration, and risk prevention of Cultural Heritage.
- Development of automatic methods aimed at reducing the routine work of the archaeologist and of the investigators of ancient finds:
- Automatic evaluation of the geometry and description of the same through denoted forms of a general type, valid regardless of the contextual elements concerning the asset.
- Cataloging of digital artifacts which includes all the information necessary for correct and accurate documentation of cultural heritage, according to the most accredited methodologies for digital libraries.
- Development of annotation schemes for digitized assets, for the sharing of information by scholars who analyze the find.
- Study of ancient and traditional technologies and materials.
- Development of 3D scanning methods and technologies, for the acquisition of images and the virtual reconstruction of cultural heritage in hostile contexts.
